Why natural fibre fits here

Robustness and lightweight design are no contradiction in construction machinery

Engine hoods, cover flaps and cladding on construction machinery have to take a lot: impact, dirt, weathering and regular opening for service. The common assumption that lightweight design must come at the expense of robustness does not apply to natural-fibre composite — the fibre is impact-resistant and less prone than glass fibre to breaking into sharp splinters.

In practice, handling often matters more than absolute weight on these parts: an engine hood opened daily in service benefits directly from every kilogram saved. Repair-friendliness is added to that — damaged areas can be repaired instead of replacing the entire part.

Questions from this sector

Are natural-fibre hoods as robust as GFRP hoods?
In suitable applications they achieve mechanical properties comparable to GFRP, at higher impact resistance. The design is always based on the specific load case — blanket statements are misleading with fibre composites.
What about repairs in the field?
Natural-fibre composite is repair-friendly: damaged areas can be repaired instead of replacing the entire part. On large-area hoods this is a noticeable cost factor over the service life.
Can brackets and inserts be integrated?
Yes. Fastening points, inserts and mounting points are provided for in the layer build-up and locally reinforced, so the part is delivered ready to fit.
What does the switch deliver on an engine hood?
Besides weight, mainly handling in service and repair-friendliness. How large the effect is on your part is assessed in the concept study from a drawing or sample.
